Dr. Alexander Lingas, Music Director
PASSION
AND RESURRECTION by IVAN MOODY
Conducted by the composer - Oratorio for chorus,
soloists, strings and bells
Cappella
Romana gave the North American premiere of this
work in 1996, and we are pleased to welcome again
British composer Ivan Moody to conduct Passion
and Resurrection, a moving oratorio for
chorus, soloists and instrumental ensemble that
weaves the Gospel narrative with radiant hymns
from the Russian and Greek Orthodox services of
Holy Week. On tour, Cappella Romana will open the
Eclectic
Orange Festival of the Philharmonic Society of
Orange County and give a concert in St. Sophia's Greek
Orthodox Cathedral concert series in Los Angeles.
NEW YEAR'S IN OLD
AND NEW ROME
Alexander Lingas, director - Ioannis Arvanitis,
guest artist - Old Roman and Byzantine Chant
Back
by popular demand, virtuoso Byzantine chanter Ioannis
Arvanitis from Athens, Greece joins the
men of Cappella again for a stunning program of
Old Roman and Byzantine chant for the feasts of
the Nativity and Circumcision of Christ. Ioannis
Arvanitis is a rising star in a new generation of
scholar-performers of medieval chant, and has
worked with such ensembles as Ensemble Organum
with Marcel Peres and the Greek Byzantine Choir
with Lycourgos Angelopoulos.
ALL-NIGHT VIGIL
by PETER TCHAIKOVSKY
A passionate setting of ancient melodies that
provided the model for Rachmaninoff's Vespers
Alexander
Lingas directs Cappella Romana at the close of
Bright Week--the week immediately following
Orthodox Pascha (Easter)--with a passionate
setting of the All-Night Vigil by Peter
Tchaikovsky. Completed in 1882, Tchaikovsky was
the first to treat the Vigil as a choral cycle,
more than three decades before Rachmaninoff wrote
his famous setting in 1915. Sung in the original
Church Slavonic.

| Cappella Romana to
Record Ivan Moody's Akathistos Hymn |
Ivan
Moody's
largest work to date is his setting in English of
the Akathistos Hymn, written for
the Cappella Romana. The ensemble gave the world
premiere
in 1999, presenting it in concert four times
since then. The composer has proclaimed that
"unless Cappella Romana records it, no one
will know how to sing it!". Recording sessions for
this exciting project are scheduled for August
2002, with the composer in attendance. Dr. Lingas
will direct, after returning from Europe on a
research trip.
You may
pre-order this CD at substantial savings by
clicking here.
An excerpt of
the Hymn was sung at the benefit receptions
following the recent concerts in Portland and
Seattle. Over $2,000 was raised at these events
alone.
The artistic
costs for this endeavor are ambitious, nearly
$10,000 for artists, engineer, producer and
digital editing. The recording will be presented
in a double-CD format. If you would like to
contribute to this worthy project, please contact
our office at info@cappellaromana.org. Every gift counts!
