Join Cappella Romana on Labor Day weekend (August 29-30) just before its European tour as it explores the musical legacy of the ancient civilization of Byzantium with ‘The Fall of Constantinople.’ Majestic ceremonies for the cathedral of Hagia Sophia, triumphant assertions of superiority by Westerners, and fervent prayers for the healing of political and religious divisions are followed by two poignant laments for the Fall of Constantinople. The first is by Manuel Chrysaphes, the last imperial cantor at Hagia Sophia, and the second by Guillaume Dufay, the 15th century’s most important composer in the West.

Sacred Songs: Studies in Byzantine Hymnography by Eva Catafygiotu Topping

LOOK INSIDE the book (PDF of sample pages)

Sacred Songs: Studies in Byzantine Hymnography

“Eva Topping’s book brings together seventeen important studies which examine in careful detail the rich bounty of Byzantine hymns. Her studies address who the Byzantine hymnographers were – including significant women hymnographers. These chapters treat in depth specific Orthodox hymns for major feast days, Lent and Holy Week, and specific saints, with a sensitive, yet analytical presentation. Ms. Topping’s introduction to Byzantine hymnography admirably sets the stage for understanding both the literary dimensions and the spiritual treasures of the hymnological wealth of Byzantine Orthodoxy. This book is an important publishing event for the understanding of the spiritual life of Byzantium and the Orthodox Church’s ethos. We are all indebted to the author for this sterling offering.” — Rev. Dr. Stanley Samuel Harakas, St. Nina Quarterly, Volume 2, No. 4

American composer Richard Toensing creates a vibrant musical synthesis of East and West with new settings of ancient Orthodox Christmas texts. Indebted to Slavic traditions, his virtuosic Choral Concerto for unaccompanied double choir and multiple soloists uses the dramatic words of St. Romanos the Melodist (6th c.) to recount the mystery of Jesus’ birth. Toensing’s more intimate New Orthodox Carols for the Nativity of Christ alternate between exuberant celebration and joyful contemplation as they bridge the gap between Byzantine and American hymnody. Vocal ensemble Cappella Romana combines passion with scholarship in its exploration of early and contemporary music of the Christian East and West. Its name refers to the medieval Greek concept of the Roman oikoumene (inhabited world), which embraced Rome and Western Europe as well as the Byzantine Empire of Constantinople (‘New Rome’) and its Slavic commonwealth.

Cyber Monday – Mt. Sinai: Frontier of Byzantium

One of the premiere recordings available in our Cyber Monday Week Sale is our recent recording Mt. Sinai: Frontier of Byzantium!

Mt. Sinai: Frontier of Byzantium

Cappella Romana performs exquisite Byzantine musical treasures—from the cathedrals and monasteries of the Eastern Roman Empire—preserved from destruction in the Egyptian desert at the Greek Orthodox Monastery of St. Catherine at Mt. Sinai.

Features music for the medieval celebration of Vespers in honor of St. Catherine, and Byzantium’s only liturgical drama, the Service of the Three Youths in the Fiery Furnace.

Music originally commissioned by the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles for its mega-exhibition “Icons from Sinai.”

“There are several musical textures in the Furnace section, solo to choral, syllabic to highly melismatic, and they’re all handled with beautiful musicianship and and some of the best male ensemble singing you’re ever likely to hear on a CD.” — Leitourgeia kai Qurbana: Contra den Zeitgeist

“Drawn from medieval manuscripts fortunately preserved in a Greek Orthodox monastery at Mt. Sinai, the unison chant-like melody over a mesmerizing vocal drone somehow never grows tiresome, either live or on this splendid recording, which wisely preserves the cathedral echo and resonance listeners would hear live — now or a millennium or more ago.” — Oregon Arts Watch

Order Mt. Sinai: Frontier of Byzantium and One or More CDs and get 50% Off your Entire Order on during our week-long Cyber Monday Sale with promo code “2for1” — offer ends Friday, November 30th at Midnight!
