Guy Protheroe (The English Chamber Choir,
The Byzantine Festival in London) makes his
Cappella Romana debut directing a program
of virtuosic music by English composers in the
Christian West.
Drawn from the Chapel Royal and the famous
Eton Choirbook, this program of Tudor music
is crowned by John Sheppard’s monumental
motet, Media vita in morte sumus (“In the midst
of life we are in death”). St. Thomas Aquinas
was said to have been moved to tears by these
sublime words. Soaring devotional motets in
Latin and sacred anthems in English complete
the program.

Catherine van der Salm (In Mulieribus; Portland)
