Ivan Moody (b. 1964): The Akáthistos Hymn

Cappella Romana marks the beginning of its 20th-Anniversary year with Byzantium's greatest song of mystical praise: The Akáthistos Hymn to the Virgin Mary, as set by Ivan Moody. A lyrical account of humankind’s cosmic destiny, this literary masterpiece in twenty-four stanzas has been treasured for nearly 1,500 years by Eastern Christians.

Father Moody's 1998 setting, composed specially for the ensemble, weaves beloved Greek melodies into Russian choral textures as it progresses from reverent contemplation to ecstatic transcendence.

Commenting on the ensemble’s 2003 recording of The Akáthistos Hymn, the UK's Gramophone magazine wrote "Purity and radiance in perfect realisations ... Cappella Romana specialises in the Slavic and Byzantine traditions, so the excellence of this performance is no surprise."
